Assessing the Impact of Light Pollution on Ocular Health: Projecting Legal-Policy Measures
Abstract
Light pollution, which refers to the excessive or misdirected artificial light emitted at night, has emerged as a widespread environmental concern that has substantial consequences for human health. Many negative consequences, the influence on eye health is especially worrisome. Ocular health is greatly impacted by light pollution, which is defined as excessive or misdirected artificial light. This paper explores the ways that light pollution affects circadian cycles, increases the incidence of myopia, discomforts the eyes, and may even harm the retina. When circadian rhythms are disturbed, melatonin synthesis is hampered, which results in sleep disturbances that indirectly cause eye strain. Myopia is common, especially in children from metropolitan areas, and is associated with extended exposure to artificial light. Unshielded lights’ glare may induce headaches and visual discomfort, while LEDs’ high-intensity blue light can harm the retina and raise the risk of age-related macular degeneration. This paper seeks to do a thorough evaluation of the influence of light pollution on ocular health and examine the necessary legal and policy actions to alleviate these consequences.
