Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) and related technologies are increasingly common in both business and society, and their application is now extending to the healthcare industry. These advancements have the potential to significantly revolutionize several aspects of patient care and streamline administrative processes across payer, provider, and pharmaceutical sectors. AI has demonstrated
capabilities that match or exceed human performance in critical healthcare tasks, such as disease diagnosis. Currently, computers can diagnose dangerous tumors more accurately than radiologists and assist in forming cohorts for expensive clinical studies. However, widespread replacement of humans by AI across medical fields is expected to take several years due to various challenges. This paper specifies the AI potential to automate healthcare operations, examines obstacles hindering its rapid adoption in the medical sector, and assesses the various applications of AI in healthcare alongside social and legal considerations.
