Abstract

This article explores the critical issue of dowry deaths and the protection of women against this form of gender-based violence. Dowry deaths remain a pervasive concern despite the legal safeguards in place. This study delves into the effectiveness of current laws and regulations, considering both their strengths and limitations. Additionally, the influence of societal structures on dowry deaths is analyzed, shedding light on how cultural norms and social dynamics contribute to this phenomenon. The article begins with explanation of concept of dowry deaths and by presenting data on violence against women, focusing specifically on dowry-related incidents. By examining pre-existing data, the extent of the problem is highlighted, emphasizing the urgent need for comprehensive solutions. The study then evaluates the legal frameworks in place to protect women from dowry deaths, scrutinizing their efficiency in preventing such tragedies. The reasons for the non-efficiency of these laws are critically examined, encompassing factors such as inadequate enforcement, lack of awareness, and cultural complexities. Furthermore, the article investigates the intricate role of social structures in perpetuating dowry deaths. It explores how deeply ingrained gender roles, traditional practices, and societal expectations contribute to the continuation of this harmful practice. The interplay between legal
measures and cultural norms is analyzed to better understand the complexities of addressing dowry deaths solely through legislation. Finally, the study questions the sufficiency of law alone in eradicating dowry deaths. It contends that while legal reforms are vital, a holistic approach is necessary. Combining legal changes with community awareness programs, education, and efforts to shift cultural perceptions can pave the way for meaningful change.
