Abstract

One important facet of study on population is the study of migration arising out of various social, economic or political reasons. For a large country like India, the study of movement of population in different parts of the country helps in understanding the dynamics of the society better. At this junction in the economic development, in the country, especially when many states are undergoing faster economic development, particularly in areas, such as, manufacturing, information technology or service sectors, data related to migration profile of population has become more important. With this intention the present study made an attempt analyse the socio-economic conditions of the interstate migrant population working in the stone quarries in a selected districts of Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh. Internal migrants within the state somewhat better than the people migrant from one ate to another especially working in the mines due to its hazards and risk of losing life. This paper presents various sections starting from background of migration, various forms of migration. Working conditions of migration, economic status of other status migrants, etc. It also presents various provisions of the Interstate Migration Act of the constitution of India.
