Abstract

The Chakma migrant issue represents a long-standing and contentious problem not only for Arunachal Pradesh but for India as a whole. This research paper examines the intricacies of the Chakma issue, investigating legal and social pathways for resolution. It provides a critical analysis of various constitutional provisions and recommendations directly or indirectly affecting the Chakmas in
Arunachal Pradesh. Over the past six decades, the presence of the Chakma migrants has generated significant discontent among the indigenous tribal populations of the region. This paper seeks to elucidate the historical background of the Chakma migration and the underlying reasons for their settlement in Arunachal Pradesh and proposes potential solutions to this enduring issue. Rationale: The Chakma migrant issue is a deeply entrenched problem that has persisted for over six decades, leading to considerable unrest among the indigenous tribal communities of Arunachal Pradesh. Despite various legal and policy measures, the issue remains unresolved, necessitating a comprehensive examination of its legal, social, and historical dimensions. This research seeks to offer a detailed understanding of the Chakma issue by examining pertinent constitutional provisions and
their social implications. By doing so, it seeks to contribute to the formulation of effective and sustainable solutions that address the concerns of both the Chakma migrants and the indigenous tribes. Understanding the intricacies of this issue is crucial for policymakers, legal experts, and social activists working towards a harmonious resolution that upholds the rights and interests of all parties involved.
