United Nations Security Council and Accountability Lessons from Abu Ghraib
Keywords:
“scandal”, United Nations Security Council, Ghraib, globallyAbstract
The Abu Ghraib “scandal” exposed in 2004, was one of the many injustices in the long war on terror, declared by the United States of America on Iraq and Afghanistan. The purpose of this research is to use the example of Abu Ghraib to shed light on how one of the most significant international bodies, the United Nations Security Council, has historically been forfeiting the responsibility of condemning countries like the USA for their horrendous violations of human rights globally. It will also discuss how events like Abu Ghraib and the lack of accountability towards countries that commit such violations has contributed to a vicious cycle of violence around the world. To establish this connection, the essay relies on international treaties and conventions violated by the USA and the trivialization of international law due to its permanent membership at UNSC.
