Abstract

With the burgeoning cost of healthcare delivery, there is an increased pressure to examine cost-effectiveness in healthcare delivery. Surgical care is essential for many health-related problems, and preoperative assessment along with laboratory testing is an integral part of surgical care. `Routine` preoperative testing is not cost-effective, and recent peer-reviewed evidence gives a negative recommendation for it. A relatively recent judgment of the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (NCDRC), New Delhi (revision petition number 2586 of 2012 against the order dated 31/01/2012 in Appeal No. 550/2011 of the State Commission Gujarat) will generate much debate among the medical fraternity and probably will put the practicing anesthesiologists and surgeons in a big dilemma. The present correspondence discusses one point of view about this judgment in the light of current evidence and their foreseeable implications on the medical fraternity, society, and the nation.
