Abstract

The life insurance industry has grown significantly over the past few decades in India. It plays a pivotal role in securing the financial aspect in life of individuals and their families. This paper provides a comprehensive analysis of the performance of the life insurance business throughout India, tracing its historical evolution, important regulatory frameworks, and the market dynamics. The research presents the structure of the industry, focuses on the contributions of public and private sector, and scrutinize financial indicators such as premium collections, solvency ratios, and claim settlement rates. The diversification in life insurance products, including term-plans, policies, and Unit Linked Insurance Plans (ULIPs) are analysed to get an in-depth understanding of fluctuating consumer preferences. The influence of digitalization and the development of alternative distribution channels, like bancassurance and online platforms, are considered as well with respect to industry evolution. Moreover, the paper investigates the challenges that hinder insurance sector’s enlargement, including low insurance penetration, inappropriate selling, and regulatory difficulties. Government initiatives like Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY) is evaluated for its effectiveness in growing coverage, whereas future inclinations in innovation, technology adoption, and opportunities in under-served markets are emphasized.
