Abstract

Sustainable development has become a global priority, necessitating a multidisciplinary approach that integrates environmental responsibility with social equity. Social work, traditionally centered on social justice and community welfare, has expanded its scope to include environmental sustainability as an essential component of well-being. This paper explores the role of social work in fostering community engagement in environmental initiatives, emphasizing the intersection of social and ecological sustainability. Through advocacy, education, and direct intervention, social workers contribute to environmental justice by empowering communities, advocating for sustainable policies, and addressing the disproportionate impact of environmental degradation on marginalized populations. The paper highlights key social work strategies, including participatory community development, policy advocacy, and environmental social work, as essential tools for promoting sustainable practices. By bridging the gap between social policy and environmental action, social workers can play a transformative role in fostering ecological resilience, social equity, and sustainable community development. The study calls for greater integration of environmental concerns into social work education and practice, ensuring that professionals are equipped to address contemporary sustainability challenges effectively.
