Abstract

Aim: The study was intended to identify microbes and their resistance patterns from milk samples obtained from local sources of rural regions of Ernakulam district, Kerala, India. Method: A prospective community study was designed where 100 milk samples from local sources were collected and analysed for its microbial contamination and their resistance patterns were determined. The reports were collected and descriptive statistics were conducted and documented. Results: In total, 100 milk samples from local vendors that included milk from cattle like cow, buffalo, goat, bulk tank, and pasteurised packet milk were analysed. Results showed a positive growth of pathogenic organisms like Escherichia coli and Klebsiella sp. in about 48% of samples. The sensitivity testing revealed that many of these isolated organisms (more than 50%) showed resistance to the commonly prescribed antibiotics. Out of the total positive samples obtained, significant amount showed multi drug resistance. Conclusion: It can be concluded from our study that milk can be an excellent medium of growth for pathogenic organisms that can serve as an easy point of entry into host body and contribute to the pool of resistance genes, that can add to the public health concern of increasing antibiotic resistance.
