Abstract

Alimony, or spousal support, has changed a lot from its historical roots in patriarchal traditions to a fairer financial arrangement in modern legal systems. It was once mainly given to women as lifelong support, but now alimony laws reflect changing social dynamics, gender neutrality, and a focus on self-sufficiency. Various reforms have changed how courts decide on alimony, leading to clearer guidelines, term limits, and a stronger emphasis on fairness. More women are joining the workforce, family structures are evolving, and there’s a rise in flexible and gig-based jobs, all of which have shifted marital dynamics and financial dependence. This article outlines the historical evolution of alimony, highlighting key legal reforms and new trends in spousal support. It looks at the shift from indefinite support to time-limited and rehabilitative alimony. It also examines how gender neutrality affects family law and how legislative changes influence alimony decisions. Additionally, it reviews international approaches to alimony, analyzing landmark cases that have shaped current legal practices.
