The institution of marriage did not exist in the primitive society. At that time the man lived like an animal and his primary concern was food and shelter. With the advancement of society, the needs of the man crystallized and he started leading a civilized life. He also became aware of other material needs surrounding him and come to know the concepts of profession and ownership. With this change in life, the sex life which was absolutely free in the primitive society also thought to be regulated. The human being also wanted to know his children. This was not possible until or unless sex relationship could be made an exclusive union of man and women. Firstly the concept of group marriages came to existence and from this it narrowed down to the present concept of marriage as an exclusive union.
