Abstract

This study looked at how Boko Haram’s insurgency and psychological stress affected students’ academic performance at the Government Girls Science and Technology College in Dapchi, Yobe State, Nigeria. Two objectives were stated: (1) to assess the level of psychological trauma among girl child students caused by Boko Haram at the Government Girls Science and Technical College Dapchi. (2) To assess the effect of psychological trauma on girl child students’ academic performance among students of Government Girls Science and Technical College Dapchi. Two research questions and two hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. This study adopted a descriptive survey design with a quantitative approach. The population of the study comprises five hundred and forty five (545) students SS1, SS2, and SS3. A convenient and simple random sampling procedure was used
to select the respondents to participate in the study. A modified ten (10) item questionnaire with a four (4) point Likert scale served as the data collection tool. The means and standard deviations were used to analyse the data. The results obtained revealed that the Boko Haram insurgency caused a high level of psychological trauma among students such as fear, anxiety, and depression among others. Also the findings here revealed that Boko Haram attack had an effect on academic performance among girl-child students at the Governments Girls Science and Technical College Dapchi. Practice- oriented recommendations were made: The study suggested that the state and federal governments should offer sufficient security in both the schools and the greater society. Also, a psychosocial support program should be organized in the schools to remedy the students’ psychological trauma. In addition, it is important to rebuild any schools that Boko Haram has destroyed and persuade students
to return to them.
